a "sweeper" (often referred to as a course sweep or tail walker) is a designated race official, volunteer, or staff member who stays at the absolute back of the participant field. Course Teardown: At many events, sweepers are responsible for picking up directional signs, cones, and course markers as they go, signaling to traffic and police that the course is clear and the event has concluded.
